Leonids Meteor Shower 2026

The Leonids are an annual meteor shower caused by debris from Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. As Earth passes through this debris stream, tiny particles enter our atmosphere at around 71 km/s, creating bright streaks of light known as meteors.
The meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Leo, giving the shower its name. At its peak, the Leonids can produce up to around 15 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. The Moon will set around midnight, providing darker skies and better conditions for observing fainter meteors later in the night.
