While the UAE's summer heat keeps many indoors during the day, the season also offers some of the year's most spectacular astronomical sights after sunset. As temperatures cool in the evening, the skies come alive with the Moon, planets, and the brilliant band of the Milky Way, making summer an ideal time to reconnect with the universe.

What Can You See in the UAE's Summer Night Sky?

The Summer Triangle: A Guide to the Season's Brightest Stars

Despite the summer heat, the UAE's night skies come alive after sunset with some of the brightest stars of the year. One of the most recognizable celestial landmarks is the Summer Triangle, a large asterism formed by the brilliant stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair. Although not an official constellation, these three stars serve as a guide to many of the season's most spectacular celestial objects.

Each of these stars has a fascinating story. Vega, located about 25 light-years from Earth, is one of the brightest stars in the northern sky and was once the North Star thousands of years ago due to Earth's changing axis. Deneb, over 2,600 light-years away, is one of the most luminous stars visible to the naked eye, while Altair, just 17 light-years away, rotates so rapidly that it is flattened at its poles. Interestingly, all three stars bear names of Arabic origin, reflecting the lasting legacy of Arab astronomers whose contributions continue to shape modern astronomy.

The Summer Triangle rises high overhead during the evening and remains visible throughout the night, making it easy to locate with the naked eye from almost anywhere in the UAE. The best time to see the Summer Triangle is from June to August, when it appears high in the evening sky.

Under dark skies away from city lights, it also serves as a celestial pointer to countless star clusters, nebulae, and the glowing band of the Milky Way.

Which Planets Can You Observe This Summer?

Summer also offers excellent opportunities to observe several of our neighboring planets. Depending on the date, Mars, Saturn, and Venus can all be visible during different parts of the night. Saturn, with its magnificent rings, is one of the season's highlights and becomes an unforgettable sight through a telescope. Venus shines brilliantly near the horizon during twilight, while Mars appears as its distinctive reddish-orange point of light.

Unlike stars, planets do not twinkle because they are much closer to Earth. They can often be identified as bright, steady objects that slowly change position from night to night as they orbit the Sun. While they can be seen with the naked eye, telescopes reveal incredible details, including Saturn's rings, the phases of Venus, and the surface features of Mars when conditions allow.

When Is the Best Time to See the Milky Way?

Summer marks the peak season for observing the Milky Way, offering some of the year's most breathtaking views of our home galaxy. On clear, moonless nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky as a luminous river of billions of stars, woven together with dark dust clouds, glowing nebulae, and star-forming regions that are invisible from brightly lit cities.

The best opportunities to witness this celestial spectacle in the UAE occur during the new moon periods between June and September, when the sky is at its darkest. This year, the optimal viewing windows are 12–17 July, 10–15 August, and 9–13 September. And the best time to witness the Milky Way is during late evening and early morning hours, typically between 10:00 PM and 3:00 AM, when the galaxy's bright core rises high above the UAE's skies. One of the finest locations for Milky Way observation is Al Quaa Desert in Abu Dhabi, renowned as one of the UAE's darkest skies and a favorite destination for astronomers and astrophotographers.

To help the public experience these extraordinary skies, Dubai Astronomy Group offers private Astro Tourism experiences at Al Quaa Desert. Led by experienced astronomers, these excursions combine guided stargazing, telescopic observations, laser-guided tours of the night sky, and astrophotography opportunities, allowing visitors to experience the Milky Way in all its splendor while learning about the wonders of our galaxy.

Looking Back at Our First Steps Beyond Earth

Another celestial highlight this summer is International Moon Day, celebrated annually on 20 July to commemorate humanity's first steps on the lunar surface during NASA's historic Apollo 11 mission in 1969. To mark the occasion, Dubai Astronomy Group, in collaboration with SEE Institute, The Sustainable City, will host an evening dedicated to our closest celestial neighbor. Visitors can enjoy expert talks exploring the Moon's history and future, an immersive planetarium experience, interactive family activities, and live telescopic observations that reveal the Moon's craters, mountains, and vast lunar plains. The event celebrates not only one of history's greatest scientific achievements but also the spirit of exploration that continues to inspire future generations.

  • Date: Monday, 20 July 2026
  • Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
  • Location: SEE Institute, The Sustainable City, Dubai
  • Tickets: AED 100 per person
